Spotlight: Nazmul Islam, Director of Research Systems

May 9, 2025

Health Sciences IT is proud to welcome Nazmul Islam as the inaugural Director of Research Systems, officially joining our team in January 2025. With over a decade of experience in advancing research IT infrastructure, Nazmul brings deep expertise and a visionary approach to his new role—one that will help shape the future of secure, high-performance research computing at Yale.

Before coming to Yale, Nazmul served as IT Director at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s School of Medicine. There, he led transformative projects, including the development of UAB’s first HIPAA and FISMA-compliant data centers. His leadership not only modernized the institution’s research capabilities but also generated significant cost savings—$30 million—through the implementation of a new research and analytical platform. His work in building award-winning research computing environments and unifying clinical and research data systems has positioned him as a national leader in academic research IT.

At Yale, Nazmul leads the newly formed Research Systems team, which spans three core service areas: Research Compute Infrastructure, Lab Solutions, and Specialty Systems. “As a new team, our main responsibilities are to provide holistic research IT support to Yale stakeholders,” he explains. “This includes everything from supporting lab and specialty equipment to enabling secure, high-performance computing, both in the cloud and on-prem, as well as cross-institutional collaboration with Yale-New Haven Health.”

Since arriving, Nazmul has already hit the ground running. His team is actively preparing for the July 2025 launch of two new high-performance computing platforms designed to support the rapidly growing demands of data-driven research across the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health. At the same time, they are providing daily technical support to research labs and faculty members, ensuring a seamless research experience.

Though he’s only a few months into his new role, Nazmul is already embracing all that Yale has to offer. “I am humbled to be part of Yale’s rich legacy and to work alongside world-class staff and faculty,” he says. “My favorite thing to do is explore the beautiful campus, visit the art galleries and museums, and soak in the intellectual atmosphere.”

Please join us in welcoming Nazmul to Health Sciences IT!
